DIY Pressure Washing: Clean Your Home With Tools You Already Have

Want to give your outdoor spaces a refresh but don’t have a fancy pressure washer? No worries — you might be surprised at how much you can do with tools you already have lying around. While it won’t replace a professional wash, this DIY approach can definitely hold you over until your next deep clean.
1. Use a High-Pressure Nozzle on Your Hose
A solid hose nozzle with a concentrated spray setting can work wonders. Look for ones labeled “jet” or “power” — they won’t match the strength of a real pressure washer, but they’re great for rinsing off dirt, pollen, and surface grime from driveways, patios, siding, and more.
2. Mix Up a Simple Cleaning Solution
You can make an effective cleaner using things you probably already have:
¼ cup dish soap (gentle on surfaces)
½ cup white vinegar (for cutting through grime)
1 gallon warm water
Pour it into a pump sprayer or a bucket and apply with a stiff brush. Let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing and rinsing.
3. Broom + Elbow Grease = Power Combo
A stiff outdoor broom or deck brush is your best friend here. Scrub in circles or long strokes depending on the surface. It takes a little work, but it’s super effective for patios, concrete steps, and decks.
4. Try a Leaf Blower First
Before you wash anything, give the area a good blow-down. Leaves, dust, and loose debris can make cleaning harder. A quick pass with a leaf blower clears the way for a better clean.
5. Don’t Forget Safety
Even at low pressure, spraying into electrical outlets, vents, or light fixtures isn’t safe. Keep water away from areas where it can seep in and cause damage. And if you're mixing any cleaning products, wear gloves and avoid strong chemicals like bleach.
When to Call in the Pros
If your surfaces are stained with mold, mildew, oil, or years of built-up grime, it might be time for a professional wash. But for light maintenance and touch-ups, this DIY method can keep things looking fresh in between.
